A fresh probe has been ordered into the cases of top officials within the present administration - It is alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari has asked for the probe of SGF, Babachir Lawal, and Acting EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu - The probe comes on the heels of Magu's rejection by members of the Nigerian Senate An alleged directive by President Buhari to probe some of the officials working within the APC-led government, has been indicated in a statement by the presidents special aide, Garba Shehu. Shehu said in a statement on Sunday, December 18, that “the attention of the presidency has been drawn to a number of reports in the media, in which various accusations of corruption have been levelled against some top officials in the administration” . “In that regard, President Buhari has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation to investigate the involvement of any top government officials accused of any wrong-doing. If any of them are liable they will not escape prosecution.” Although the statement did not mention any specific officials, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and the Acting Chairman of the anti- graft EFCC have both been accused of corrupt practices. Mr Lawal was indicted by the Senate of making millions of naira of public funds from non-executed contracts in the troubled north- east using one of his companies. The Senate has since asked for his suspension and prosecution, although he has denied any wrongdoing. Magu’s confirmation as substantive chairman was blocked by the Senate last week. The Senate based its decision on a “security report” believed to have emanated from the State Security Service, SSS. A fact-check of the content of the report by Premium Times, however, revealed most of the allegations were false. In a similar vein, Magu, risk being jailed for disobeying court orders. This was according to a notice by a magistrate court in Mpapa, Abuja, stating a committal action against anti-graft agency boss. The EFCC, Magistrate Okeagu Azubuike stated, had failed to comply with an order of court discharging an expired remand warrant for a defendant identified as Na'im Lawal on December and therefore endorsed form 48, 'Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to Order of Court' against the EFCC acting chairman. The accused was nabbed by the anti- corruption agency on October 14, 2016 after allegedly conspiring to steal government money and obtaining money under false pretense but the court has ruled in his favour.
