CBN MOVES TO END BLACK MARKET IN FOREIGN EXCHANGE MARKET

The naira trades, sometimes 40% below the official rates, against the dollar. Adeosun said the CBN has been mandated to scrap the damaging market. The central bank (CBN) “has been directed to do this and CBN has promised to do something by putting a system in place to eliminate the black market because it’s damaging the economy”, Adeosun told a conference. A CBN spokesman, Isaac Okorafor, said the central bank was working towards “ensuring that the forex market operates as effectively as we would envisage”. He said the aim was to “ensure there is no black market” but did not give details of how this would be achieved. The Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto, on Tuesday announced his government’s new policy for issuing visas to Nigerians and other foreigners wanting to visit Indonesia for any purpose. Purwanto told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that under the new policy, his Embassy would no longer be involved in visa processing, but only in the collection of visa applications. The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to de- freeze all properties belonging to Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, that were early confiscated based on the order of the court made on July 20 and August 2. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba gave the order while ruling on application filed by Governor Fayose through his counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN).The Governor had made the application shortly after EFCC had seized his properties. Ruling on the application which was argued yesterday, Justice Dimgba noted that the interim orders which were made on July 20 and reaffirmed on August , were made to last for 45 days to enable the anti-graft agency carry out its investigations. The killings took place as the state was busy at a “Peace Concert” in a stadium in Jalingo –the state capital – organised by Governor Darius Ishaku. Dozens of other farmers were severely injured in the attack. Some sources said Fulani marauders on Saturday afternoon invaded the Tiv community in Dan- Anacha, whose name was recently changed to Kwararafa, where they hacked down people. The hostilities lasted until yesterday morning. Hundreds of Tiv residents have reportedly fled Dan- Anacha, although soldiers and policemen were deployed in the area to keep the peace. A new national labour movement called United Labour Congress of Nigeria has been formed by 25 industrial unions from the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Saturday. The ULC elected 13 executives to drive its mandate in which the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joseph Ajaero, emerged as its National President. In addition, Igwe Achese of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, became its Deputy President; K. Kadiri became its National Vice President while Onyeka Chris emerged as its acting General Secretary. Meanwhile, the Chukwuemeka Anohu-led Ad-hoc Committee will from tomorrow (Tuesday) commence the probe of the DFIs such as BOI, Bank of Agriculture, BOA, the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, NEXIM, and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC. Others to appear before the committee at the investigative hearing are the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency, SMEDAN, the National Economic Reconstruction Fund, NERFUND, and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN, amongst others. ExxonMobil To Pay Millions To Its Sacked Nigerian Workers

U.S. oil giant, ExxonMobil Corporation, will pay up to N350 million each to some of the sacked Nigerian employees as severance payments, driven by years of service and additional redundancy gratuities. It was also learnt that of about six per cent of the workforce affected by the right sizing carried out by the firm, the average payment per person hovers around N140 million, including redundancy pay of about 36 months basic salary. Ban On The Importation Of Dirty Fuel

The Federal Government has said that the enforcement of the ban on the importation of dirty fuel with high sulphur content from Europe to Nigeria will begin from July 1, 2017, The Punch reports. The Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, stated this at an event organised by the ministry in Abuja on Friday to mark her one year in office. On December 1, 2016, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire agreed to introduce strict standards to ensure cleaner, low sulphur diesel fuels and vehicle emission standards, effectively cutting off Europe’s West African market to export its dirty fuels. She said, “From July 1, 2017, we will commence the enforcement of the 50ppm sulphur in fuel. And the July deadline is on all fuels, your diesel, petrol and kerosene. Everybody knows that this is going to take some efforts, which is why we gave the six months’ notice. What is more important is that we are working with the refineries on a long-term approach.

Victor Ezugwu, the General Officer Commanding of the Nigerian Army 7 Division in Maimalari, escaped being lynched by rampaging Nigerian soldiers on Friday morning, PREMIUM TIMES can report. Details of the attempted assault on Mr. Ezegwu, a major general, by troops attached to ‘Operation Rescue Finale’ in Sambisa Forest, came a day after he denied our report about a mutiny on the battlefront. The troops were enraged over poor welfare arrangement and alleged deceit by their commanders, our sources recounted. Specifically, they accused the commander of leaving them to fight for two days without food. The incident occurred in Sambisa Forest on Friday morning, as this newspaper reported. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has paid players and officials of the Super Falcons their outstanding allowances after receiving the money from the Federal Government on Friday. This is according to a statement by NFF’s spokesman, Ademola Olajire in Abuja. The statement quoted NFF’s Head of Women’s Football, Ruth David as saying, “the bank accounts of the players and officials are being credited as we speak. They will all receive credit alerts of the monies due to them, as released by the government, before the end of the day.” The payments were for the Super Falcons’ participation at the 10th Women Africa Cup of Nations finals, which the team won after defeating hosts Cameroon 1-0 in the final in Yaounde on 3rd December.
